About César Vallejo: Autógrafos olvidados
The reputation of César Vallejo (1892-1938) rests on his complex, unclassifiable poetry written from the viewpoint of a committed Marxist. He spent his early, formative, years in Peru, where his sympathy for the exploited peasantry inspired both his poetry and his politics, but in 1923 went to live in Paris (where he knew Artaud, Picasso and Cocteau). There, always in the bleakest of economic circumstances, he produced his anguished poems, culminating in the frantic productivity of his last months, when he alternated between his Spanish Civil War verse and poems with a more personal orientation. This book reproduces in facsimile fifty-two handwritten manuscripts of these later poems, discovered recently in the Angel Rama archive, Montevideo. They consist of early drafts of poems published posthumously in the Poemas humanos and España, aparta de mí este cáliz. For the first time scholars will be able to see for themselves the original handwritten drafts of these poems, and compare them with his later typewritten versions. The facsimile reproductions are accompanied by two essays by Juan Fló - one of which explains the circumstances leading to his discovery of the manuscripts, the other of which evaluates the originality of Vallejo's verse - and an essay by Stephen M Hart which analyses the various stages of composition evident in the poems, from early manuscript draft to final typescript version.STEPHEN M. HART is Professor of Hispanic Studies, University College, London. JUAN FLÓ is Professor of Aesthetics at the Institute of Philosophy, Universidad de la República-Uruguay.
